Split – Critical Thinking & Mindfulness – Embrace the Present Moment and Navigate Complex Ideas

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course follows a structured approach to examining how meaningful discussions unfold and how to support thoughtful, collaborative dialogue within the school environment. Participants will explore the idea of “response vs. reaction” and learn how this distinction helps cultivate awareness of the present moment. We will examine the fundamentals of intentional thinking to strengthen compassion, cooperation, and constructive communication. Listening as a skill will be addressed in depth and connected to the practice of engaging in purposeful, reflective conversation. Together, we will design student-led discussions that allow learners to apply their knowledge, form their own opinions on classroom topics, and reinforce what they have learned.

Participants will sharpen their critical thinking abilities by working with concepts such as problem-solving strategies and differentiating between opinions and factual information. Mindfulness practices will be introduced both in the classroom and outdoors, encouraging students to activate all their senses and contribute to a calmer, more positive learning environment. By becoming more present, students learn to analyze arguments and counterarguments, structure their reasoning, and clearly visualize how their ideas connect.

This course is especially valuable for educators seeking to deepen the use of soft skills in their teaching, while creating an intellectually stimulating classroom culture—one where ideas are questioned, perspectives are explored, and complex issues are discussed with confidence.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Participants will develop the ability to:

• Apply teambuilding approaches to create a positive, cooperative classroom environment that reduces early school leaving and supports overall school success
• Gain a solid introduction to critical thinking, including fostering constructive discussions, identifying misinformation, and effectively distinguishing fact from opinion
• Use the present moment through Mindfulness—a highly effective relaxation approach that is transforming today’s classrooms
• Strengthen essential interpersonal skills by advancing communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities
• Understand the benefits of incorporating outdoor learning experiences into teaching practice
